Delta Omega Founders' Day Worship Pt. 1

On February 17, 2019, Delta Omega participated in the first part of their Founders' Day Worship at First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison St. Petersburg, VA. First Baptist continued its 2019 Black History celebration with the theme: “Our Historic Mentors - What’s In Your Hands”?”

The celebration reflected on the lives and legacies of Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Johnson Vaughan, Mary Jackson, the women of color, who worked in the Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. The historic legacy of these ladies was captured in the movie “Hidden Figures”.

Dr. Nieta J. Scott-Dunmore, President of Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, gave remarks and more insightful highlights of Dr. Johnson's history and life as a member of the FIRST African-American Sorority, where she served as President of her chapter, Lambda Omega Chapter, Newport News, VA. She also went on to tell the church and community of her travel to and from the Academy Awards where she was honored in 2017, as to the plane she was flown on and the former NASA physician and astronaut, Dr. Yvonne Cagle, who wheeled her onto the stage for worldwide recognition.

According to www.britannica.com/biography/Katherine-Johnson-mathematician, Katherine Goble Johnson is the African American mathematician who calculated and analyzed the flight paths of many spacecraft during her more than three decades with the U.S. space program. She received the Presidential Medal of Honor in 2015 by former President Barack Obama.
